History of Sleepy Forest and the Pool Family

1963 - June. Bob's Grandpa Hansen, was an avid fisherman who tied his own flies and regularly visited Big Bear. Shown are Bob's mom Nancy, Bob, (age 5) Kathy (age 3) and Tom (age 1). This cabin still exists today at the Colorado lodge on Jeffries, about 1/4 mile southwest of Sleepy Forest. The lake was often nearly empty on dry years in those days. The picture on the right is Bob's Aunt Mamie and Grandma Hansen, taken while we fish off the old Indian Dam.

1978 - Bob and Kathy married this year and ski together in Big Bear. Shown is a trip to Crystal Ridge, (Now Magic Mountain Alpine Slide). click photos to enlarge

1979 - With Bob's parents, Marvin and Nancy Pool, they buy a 6 cabin lodge, called South Pines Cottages for its location near the South Shore of Big Bear Lake. Shown are cabins 4 and 5, now 204 and 203. Bob walked into 4 and the floor collapsed. It hadn't been remodeled since 1945.

That'll be the honeymoon cottage, his mom says. And she proceeds to explain that married couples these days would need romantic getaways and we would build them. Compare with 204 today (click).

1980 - January 22, Kathy and Bob move in to cabin 6, (now 202). Kathy sits on deck holding our first dog while her Mom and Bob look on. It took a week to open the first rental, Cabin 2. Sister Kathy Pool helped the first month and then went off to become Kathy Spencer. Tom moved in and helped for several years off and on.

Cabin 6 was turned into a rental in 1983 and a small office was added where Kathy was sitting. Because it was quiet, Arnold slept here. Click to see 202 today. The small office is still there, locked up like a time capsule.

1980 - January 30, Cabin 2 (now 208) rents to Jeff **** and his girlfriend for $28. We start a fire and put a pot of stew on the stove for them. 2 weeks later cabin 1 (now 209) is opened.
August 1980 - Kathy gives birth to Matt. Bob is hanging drywall that day and Kathy first cleans the cabins and calls the scheduled guests to let them know she will leave the key under the doormat when she goes to have her baby. Bob goes to the hospital after work to see Matt born. The local hospital puts us in a lake view room and feeds us porterhouse steaks and pink champagne after the birth.
1980 - Bob puts a homemade snowplow on the truck and builds a homemade sign (that barely says "South Pines Cottages".
The Pool Family, (Marvin, Nancy, Tim, 10, Bob, Kathy, Matt) celebrates first Big Bear Christmas in remodeled cottage 4, now 204. That small cabin had one bedroom, 2 closets and 2 double sleeper couches then.

Again, compare with 204 today (click). It now sleeps just 2 persons with a Jacuzzi tub. It finally became a honeymoon cottage in 1987.

1981 - We enjoy our second Oktoberfest and Kathy helps out the Chambermaids in her Dirndl. It was a small-town party back then. In 1980, 2 month old Matt is left on a table of beer-drinking friends while Bob and Kathy dance the chicken-dance. What? These guys were talented, they could drink a beer with no hands, while standing on their head! Kathy made a 4-something (months in Big Bear?) cake for Marvin and Nancy.
